Manage Your Audio Files

These instructions are for people who use iTunes to listen to and manage their music on their computer. This first section is for those on a Mac. They may vary slightly based on which operating system you use or which version of iTunes you are running but the basics are all very similar.

Find your music files

In order to upload your MP3 files to use you need to know where they are stored on your computer which is not always in an obvious place. You can find them by going through the “music” tab on your finder but if there is a lot of music in there then there may be a lot of files and it is easy to get lost. The easiest way to find them is through the iTunes application itself. If you are looking at the main page of your iTunes simply pick the track you are looking for and right click on it. A drop-down menu will appear and one of the options will be “show in finder”. In the first screen shot  I want to find “steal for me” by Tom Taylor and I can do that by right-clicking on the track and then choosing “show in finder”. The result will be a window opening showing where the file is (and likely the other files from the same album or artist as well).

Convert your files to MP3

Once you have located your music files you want to make sure they are in the right format for upload. Depending on how you got them originally they may be in a version called m4a. The m4a files will need to be converted to MP3′s which is actually much easier than it sounds. If you look at the screen shot we will take the same song we just located and do the same right-click. This time select the “create MP3 version”. In only a few seconds there will be a second version of the song that will appear. The second version will be directly below the first and will be the MP3.

*Tip* some people will just then delete the first m4a version so as not to have too many duplicate files on their computers.

If you are preparing to upload some files to FaceTracks we would recommend creating a temporary folder on your desktop called “to upload” and then once you identify the tracks that you want to send us, copy them into that file for easy access.
